If you are approaching a traditional publisher...
Remember, if your manuscript is accepted for publication your publisher will assign an editor to work on your book. All publishers have their own "house styles", so no single edit will suit all companies. However, an edit from us will sort out most of the rough edges that might prejudice acceptance.
If you plan to self-publish...
An edit from us will give your book that polish that self-published works sometimes lack.
Editing Style
Editing may be done through "Track Changes", which will let you see exactly what changes have been made. Otherwise, you may request a "clean edit", where the changes will be invisible to anyone who is not familiar with the original. Please state which you want when first requesting your edit. Please also state which style of spelling you wish to use; US, UK or Australian/NZ.
How do I send my manuscript?
Save your manuscript as a single MS Word document or in RTF. It should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12 (or a similar font). There should be no blank lines between paragraphs or fancy formatting such as text boxes unless the work is non-fiction. Can I send hard copy instead?
No. All editing is done on a manuscript attachment.
How much will this cost?
We charge by the hour, and some jobs take longer than others. For mss received after the end of March 2011, Sally charges AU$25.00 for the first hour, and AU$15.00 for each subsequent hour or part thereof). In general, Sally edits ten double-spaced pages in an hour, but this can vary, depending on how much needs doing. Obviously, technical non-fiction with references and terms that need checking will take longer to edit than a children's chapter book.
Using the formula below and a calculator, you can work out a probable cost.
Formula: First hour or first 10 pages (or part thereof) - $25.00
Each subsequent hour or 10 pages (or part thereof) - $15.00
Will you give me an exact quote?
Not unless your story is a children's picture book text. Otherwise, you can work out a probable cost using the formula above. The actual cost may be less, if the ms is a fairly "clean" one, or it might be up to $30.00 more.
How long will this take?
Turnover time varies, according to how many manuscripts have joined the queue, how long they are, and what other jobs are to hand. A manuscript will usually be acknowledged within a week of arrival. Turnaround can be as short as a day (for a very short manuscript) to several weeks (if the queue is very long).
Will you re-edit the same ms after a rewrite?
Yes. This may be done free of charge for a picture book text. Costs for longer mss will be $15.00 per hour.
How do I pay?
Sally accepts the following methods of payment.

Money order or cheque made out in Australian dollars to S. Odgers, P.O. Box 41, Latrobe, Tasmania, Australia, 7307
The details will be on your account. Payment is due within three months of the assessment. Extensions may be granted if necessary. Please don't staple the cheque or money order to the note or envelope.
